Daniel Radcliffe remembers Robbie Coltrane as 'incredible actor,' 'lovely man' on 'Harry Potter'

Harry Potter" co-stars are remembering Robbie Coltrane, the Scottish actor who gained

worldwide acclaim as Rubeus Hagrid in the "Harry Potter" film series. Coltrane died Friday at age 72, according to his agent Belinda Wright.

The actor is perhaps known best to "Harry Potter" fans as Hagrid, the good-natured half-giant groundskeeper of Hogwarts and a mentor to Harry as he navigated the wizarding world.

Daniel Radcliffe, the titular star of the "Harry Potter" series, remembered Coltrane as "one of the funniest people I've met" as he recalled memories of him bringing good cheer on set.

"(He) used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set," Radcliffe said Friday in a statement to USA TODAY. "I’ve

especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on '

Prisoner of Azkaban,' when we were all hiding from the

torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut."

"He was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man," Radcliffe added.

More "Harry Potter" stars sent their condolences on social media, including the book saga's writer, J.K. Rowling.

"I'll never know anyone remotely like Robbie again. He was an incredible talent, a complete one off, and I was beyond fortunate to know him, work with him and laugh my head off with him," Rowling wrote on Twitter. "I send my love and deepest condolences to his family, above all his children."

James Phelps, who played Fred Weasley in the film series, remembered his first impression of Coltrane when filming the movies.

"I will miss the random chats about all subjects under the sun," Phelps wrote on Twitter. "I'll never forget in September 2000, Robbie Coltrane came over to a very nervous 14yr old me on my 1st ever day on a movie set and said 'enjoy it, you'll be great.' Thank you for that."

Coltrane rose to prominence with his role as Dr. Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald in the ITV drama series "Cracker," helping police solve crimes as a criminal psychologist, which earned him three consecutive BAFTAs for best actor. Other appearances include a Russian crime boss in the James Bond thrillers "GoldenEye" and "The World is Not Enough," voice work in the animated film "The Tale of Despereaux" (alongside "Potter" co-star Emma Watson) and roles in 2004's "Ocean's Twelve" and the 2016 miniseries "National Treasure." Queen Elizabeth II appointed Coltrane with an OBE in 2006.
